Nature "Condition Black"
Surfer in Hawaii This episode examines the dangerous weather system that swept through Hawaii in January 1998. The once-in-a-century oceanic conditions summoned the planet's surfing elite from several continents to hurriedly convene at Waimea Bay on Oahu, Hawaii. However, by mid-morning, the Coast Guard and Hawaiian Civil Defense had issued a rare proclamation: "Condition Black." No one goes into the water. The film covers a handful of the world's most intrepid and skillful surfers who defied the warning and surfed the monstrous waves - up to 40 feet high. Eyewitness accounts are combined with footage of the storm itself, some of which was captured on 70mm IMAX film.
