Hollywood: Richmond's Garden Cemetery
This special is a visually rich historical tour of a park-like cemetery - with winding roads and paths, indigenous trees and shrubbery - whose history, beauty and tranquility have made it a local treasure. The Richmond, Virginia garden cemetery, coined "Hollywood" due to the natural proliferation of holly trees on its grounds, is a mature green space with a commanding view of the James River. It is the final resting place for two U.S. presidents, the only Confederate president, several Confederate generals, a Supreme Court justice, as well as writers and local celebrities. Historians and artists discuss the Hollywood's history, including the cemetery's development in the 19th century, President James Monroe's reburial, the rivalry between authors James Branch Cabell and Ellen Glasgow, and the symbolism of the cemetery's remarkable stonework.Air Date
